EXERCISES
WEEK 1 (17/04/2020)
Our first exercise was to express 6 words given by our lecturers typographically using different type faces. During practical session Mr. Shamsul and Mr. Vinod briefed us on how to do with adobe illustrator. The six words are LOUD, DROWN, FLY, PUSH, DISAPPEAR, and HIDDEN.
In the pictures above are my rough idea sketches on how to build the font. I tried out different styles for each boxes and words. Although some of the boxes are ticked, I ended up not using the said style in the exercise because I change my mind too easily.
Shown above is the result of my exercise. It took me quite long to complete it because I had some troubles using the tools but it turned out great eventually.
(edit: this is the finalized result after getting feedback from Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul.)
WEEK 2 (24/04/2020)
Our next exercise is to animate one of the words above to make it look lively. Mr. Shamsul had showed us on how to do it on the tutorial session last week.
I just remembered to take snapshots of the process toward the end while doing it so I only have a few of my process >.<
This was after I made the artboards and edit them accordingly to make it look like its drowning. It took me only 10 boards for the whole animation. I feel like that's too less but what can I say, I'm still a beginner in the digital world.
After breaking them down into slides, I proceeded to use Photoshop to make the animation work following the steps Mr. Vinod had told in his demo video. Then I adjusted the timings in every slide in the Timeline panel as shown. After viewing it for countless times, I finally exported it as a GIF as told and this is how it turned out:
I chose drown because it seemed to be the most animate-able from all of the type expressions I've done. Also I've tried to make it as smooth as possible but I guess I need more practice. Right, sir? haha
WEEK 3 (01/05/2020)
WEEK 4 (08/05/2020)
WEEK 6 (22/05/2020)
WEEK 7 (29/05/2020)
REFLECTION
Week 1 entry: My experience on the first class was quite overwhelming, as I did not expect the lecturers themselves say that this module is really heavy. The lecturers, Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul were pretty chill with us throughout the class, which is what keeps me interested in this module. The first exercise they gave was kind of challenging for me because its hard to get an idea for the sketches. But all in all, first week wasn't that bad.
Week 2 entry:
Week 3 entry: There wasn't any class for this week because it's International Labor day but consultations or questions were still up as a teams link was provided so we could ask our lecturers for a period of an hour on the animating exercise. Also some exercises were given and a prerecorded lecture by Mr. Vinod as well. I missed the session because I woke up too late haha.
Week 4 entry: Since last week was a holiday, Mr. Vinod gave some exercises to do via facebook which was to use a new software (to me) that is InDesign. The task was to make some sort of business card using the software and some uses of typefaces
FEEDBACK
Week 1 entry: My blog wasn't complete, as for the first exercise, some of the words wasn't accurate to how I edit them so it needs to be retouched a bit.
Week 2 entry: Mr Vinod viewed my type expression exercise and he said that some of them needs a bit more correction. The word LOUD doesn't necessarily have to be tilted so I improved it by making them straight aligned to the margins. meanwhile the words FLY, DISAPPEAR, and HIDDEN needs to be retouched again.
Week 3 entry: PUBLIC HOLIDAY
Week 4 entry:
Week 5 entry:
Week 6 entry: Feedback on my project 1 was that my first composition wouldn't work because my text was right aligned and the title could be all lowercase letters to make it look like an html coding. On the second composition, the barcode could be placed on both sides of the spread.
Week 7 entry:

LECTURE NOTES
Week 1 (17/04/2020): Briefing
The first week lecture by Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul was mostly an introduction to the module and a brief on the exercises and projects. They also showed us some e-portfolio samples from our seniors as a reference to make our blog. An exercise was given to us to practice using Illustrator as Mr. Shamsul gave a tutorial during practical session.
Week 2 (24/04/2020): Type Expression demo
This week was for consultation and feedback for the type expression exercise. Mr Vinod gave us feedbacks on our works through zoom and we were called according to our group numbers.
Week 3 (01/05/2020): [PUBLIC HOLIDAY]
Week 4 (08/05/2020): Text Formatting
Today's lecture was on formatting text and Mr Vinod explained to us the basics of type formatting. Some of the important points are:
Week 5 (15/05/2020): Project 1 briefing
This week's lecture is briefing on project 1, that is text formatting and expression. The task is to be done in an editorial spread with no image or minimum graphics. The duration of this project is 1 week. The requirements are from the exercises we learned from the previous weeks.
Mr Vinod also showed some examples from students of previous batch to give us an idea of how it should look.
Week 6 (22/05/2020): Consultation of Project 1
Week 7 (29/05/2020): Project 2a Briefing
Week 9 (12/06/2020): Typography in different Mediums
There are various types of mediums used in typography. Firstly we'll cover Print type and Screen type. These types of mediums are the common ones we see today. Good typography and readability were the results of skilled typesetters and designers. And typography doesn't only exist on paper but also on a multitude of screens.

Today's lecture was on formatting text and Mr Vinod explained to us the basics of type formatting. Some of the important points are:
- Margins
- columns
- guides/rows
- Point size should be between 8-12 pt for letter heads
- determining line length by characters 35-75
- leading: distance between each line
- line length = pt size = leading

Good typography and readability were the results of skilled typesetters and designers. And typography doesn't only exist on paper but also on a multitude of screens.
- Print type: Most common typefaces used in prints are Caslon, Garamond, Baskerville and other typefaces such as them. It is because the look elegant and also intellectual as it is highly readable. Their versatility is also a factor these fonts are used for prints. Examples of print typography are shown in novels and textbooks.

- Screen type: Typography in screens are often optimized and modified to enhance readability on screen. The texts usually have a taller x-height and wider letterforms. It is also heavier in their thin strokes and they modify the curves and angles in a text. Common fonts used for screen typography are Georgia, Bodoni, Verdana, and so on. The common factors in these fonts are that they have more open spacing.
Hyperactive link/Hyperlink: is a word or a phrase or an image that you can click on, to jump to a new document or a new section that are within the current documents.
Another type of typography used is static and motion typography. A static typography has minimal characteristics in expressing words. These types of typography are seen on billboards, posters, magazines, etc. Meanwhile motion typography as stated in the name are used in music videos, advertisements, movies, etc.
