EXERCISES

Week 1:
We were briefed with the module information and did some simple exercises in class. The exercises were to edit a video that has been separated by a few clips and we needed to combine them back together again. For this exercise, we were required to use Adobe Premiere Pro.

The first video is from a mints advertisement:

The second video is about a doritos advertisement and has a bit difficulty as the video sequence wasn't in the right order, so we had to arrange them to be in the right order.

Week 2:
This week's class, we studied about the types of camera framing and storyboard.

After learning of the different kinds of shot size, we also had an in-class exercise where we were to pair up with another person and record each other according to the list of shots provided by Mr Martin. They were:
  • Low-angle wide shot
  • Frontal MCU with blurred background
  • Frontal medium shot with blurred background
  • Extreme close-up shot
  • Side-angle medium shot with blurred background
  • ¾ angle MCU shot with blurred background
  • Close-up shot
  • Eye-level medium wide shot
My teammate and I decided to shoot the clips outside our classroom, and the videos needed to be in landscape mode and 5 seconds long. After completing the list, we confirmed it with Mr Martin first if our shots were correct. Only then we shared the videos among each other as it was filmed with one phone, and what's left is to compile them into one video, with subtitles that describes what shots are they.

The video above is the final result after editing them in Adobe Premiere Pro, and Mr Martin had also provided us a video tutorial on how to insert subtitles which I found really helpful.

Week 3:
In this week, we covered about storytelling in film.

Along with the slides, we also watched some videos in class to further understand what each acts are and the plot points. Other than that, we had also learned about film sound and the components with it. In a film, there are different types of sound elements, i.e. speech, sound effects, and music. Those materials are going to be utilized when starting out project 1, the audio dubbing exercise.

We also had an exercise that was partly done in class. Mr Martin provided us with a google doc for the 3 act structure exercise. For that, we were required to watch a short film called "Guang (2011)" and identify each acts and plot points. Another short film we needed to watch was "Lalin (2005)".
